Syria’s President H.E. Ahmed Al-Sharaa said on Tuesday that the country’s economy could reach $50 billion in 2026, with government programs and projects targeting an economy worth $200 billion within the next five to 10 years.
Speaking during a keynote dialogue at the official opening of the Arab Media Summit 2026(opens in new tab), Al-Sharaa outlined Syria’s economic ambitions following years of conflict and the lifting of international sanctions. He said Syria’s economy had reached $60 billion at its peak in 2010 before falling to around $20 billion in 2024.
“In 2026, the size of the economy may reach $50 billion, and our programs and projects aspire to reach $200 billion within the next 5-10 years,” Al-Sharaa said.
Al-Sharaa said Syria is currently undergoing a transitional phase and is studying economic models that best suit its circumstances as it seeks to move towards an open and free economy.
He acknowledged that some of the decisions being taken during the transition could have temporary consequences, but said their positive impact would become increasingly apparent to Syrian citizens over time.
He described the lifting of international sanctions as a turning point for the country, saying the measures had previously constrained Syria and ranked among the most extensive sanctions regimes in the world.
